ORLANDO · AUGUST · THE MONTH GUIDE
Orlando in August means heat and rain on the official record. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the Orlando International Airport station put the average high at 91.6°F and the month’s rain at 7.69 inches, spread across 11.5 days that each collect at least a tenth of an inch. August also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and the National Hurricane Center places most of the season’s activity between mid-August and mid-October.
Summer dates still work here with a plan. Spring water near Apopka holds its temperature through the year: the USGS gauge at Wekiwa Springs read 75.6°F on September 11, 2026, a full 16 degrees under the average August high. Swim early, keep afternoons flexible for storms, book a rate you can cancel, and enjoy long evenings, with sunset at 8:05 p.m. on August 15.

NOAA STATION NORMALS · INSIDE HURRICANE SEASON · SPRINGS AT 75.6°F
Go for: cold-feeling spring swims against a 91.6°F afternoon, park mornings before the heat builds, and daylight until 8:05 p.m. at mid-month.
Think twice before: locking in dates you cannot change, since most hurricane activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, or planning long dry afternoons outdoors.

Park tickets carry no price anywhere below, by choice: Disney and Universal price by date, and a figure written in September 2026 would be wrong within weeks, so the operators quote your day. The budget around them sits in our Florida trip-cost guide, lodging in where to stay in Florida, and park logistics for families in Florida with kids.

Every figure here comes from a real thermometer and rain gauge: the NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020 at station USW00012815, Orlando International Airport. A reanalysis grid cell averages a square of terrain instead of reading one instrument, so we use the station. It gives August an average high of 91.6°F, an average low of 73.7°F and 7.69 inches of precipitation over the month.
Rain reaches the gauge on about one August day in three: 11.5 days in an average month record at least 0.10 inch. A tenth of an inch is a passing shower’s worth. The 2.3 days a month with an inch or more are the ones to plan an indoor day around, so pack a rain shell in the park bag and keep one covered option ready each afternoon. Our Florida guide describes the wet season’s afternoon thunderstorms.
At night the air stays warm. The swing between the average high and the 73.7°F low is just under 18 degrees, so a sweater has no job outdoors. Pack breathable shirts, a hat, sunscreen, a second pair of shoes to swap when the first gets soaked, and one light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and ride queues.
On August 15, Orlando gets about 13 hours 11 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:54 a.m. and sets at 8:05 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, since Orlando runs on Eastern time, an hour ahead of Pensacola and Destin. Use the first hour after dawn for a swim and keep the evening for walking, when the sun is low.
How warm is Orlando in August?
The month runs from an average low of 73.7°F to an average high of 91.6°F, a 17.9-degree spread between dawn and mid-afternoon. We found no sea-temperature series for Orlando, which sits inland. The sea tables we use for coastal towns average daily maxima, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean, while our spring figures are single USGS gauge readings taken on September 11, 2026.
Mornings near 74°F suit shorts, a quick-dry shirt and sandals you can swim in. By mid-afternoon, with the air close to 92°F, add a wide-brimmed hat, refill water at every stop and plan shade or air conditioning for the hottest hours.
With the average low at 73.7°F, a cold night is not something to pack for.
How busy is Orlando in August? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate series for Orlando, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. Two calendar facts are solid. March fills the theme parks with family school holidays, spread across the month since there is no single spring break week. August falls inside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season, and the National Hurricane Center dates the peak to September 10.
We have no booking-lead data either, so we give no number of weeks. Orlando International (MCO) boarded 27,859,783 passengers in calendar 2024, the busiest airport in Florida, ahead of Miami. Orlando Sanford (SFB) boarded 1.4 million and lies north of MCO. We could not verify its distance to the parks, so check the drive before choosing it on fare alone. Our Florida flights guide compares the gateways.
Orange County, home to Orlando and the parks, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on rooms, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax. Compare two hotels on their after-tax totals, since one booking site may display the nightly rate before tax and another after.
If you pay for anything extra in August, pay for a refundable room rate and changeable flights. Most hurricane activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, and flexible terms let you move the trip if the National Hurricane Center tracks a storm toward central Florida. Our Florida safety guide lists what to watch before you fly.
Things to do in Orlando in August

A 91.6°F average high sits 16 degrees above the 75.6°F that Wekiwa’s USGS gauge read on September 11, 2026. July’s 92.0°F widens that contrast by less than half a degree, and September’s 89.6°F narrows it to 14 degrees, so late summer is when a spring swim feels coldest against the air.
Wekiwa Springs State Park is the nearest spring to Orlando. The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and 325 parking spaces. Rock Springs, the tubing run at Kelly Park north of Orlando, read 75.0°F on the same day. Lake Louisa State Park counts a designated swimming area, five launches, 450 feet of boardwalk, 20 cabins and 278 parking spaces.
Spring water does not follow the calendar, the air does. The gauge at Blue Spring State Park near Orange City read 74.3°F and 168 cubic feet per second on September 11, 2026. Manatees gather at springs like it in winter, when the river around them cools and the aquifer water feels relatively warm. For the manatee season, see our manatee guide, and in August use Blue Spring’s 3,050 feet of boardwalk for a shaded morning walk.
We could not verify entrance fees or opening hours: the Florida state parks site refused our reads, and fees vary by park and season, so we name nothing as free. The state inventory does explain why popular springs turn cars away on summer mornings: Wekiwa has 325 spaces, Blue Spring 187 and Rock Springs Run State Reserve 30, against 1,686 at Silver Springs State Park, the glass-bottom-boat spring. Arrive near sunrise.
Orlando in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at sunrise, 6:54 a.m. on August 15. Drive to Wekiwa Springs while its 325 spaces are still available, swim in the designated area, then walk a short stretch of the 13.7 miles of hiking trail before the air climbs toward 91.6°F. Head back for lunch and keep the afternoon for the hotel pool or an indoor attraction, since measurable rain falls on about one day in three. Go back out once the sun drops, and use the light until sunset at 8:05 p.m.
Spend day two at a theme park, with the ticket priced by the operator for your date. Arrive for opening, ride the outdoor attractions first and save indoor shows for mid-afternoon. On one of the 2.3 inch-plus rain days of an average August, flip the order and wait out the heaviest rain under cover. If the National Hurricane Center is tracking a named storm toward central Florida, follow its advisories and your booking’s change terms. Our 7-day Florida itinerary extends the trip.
Orlando in August vs July and September

| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.5 | 11.5 | 9.2 |
| Hurricane season | Inside | Inside, most activity from mid-August | Inside, peak Sep 10 |
July averages a high of 92.0°F, August 91.6°F and September 89.6°F, all from the same NOAA station and the same 1991-2020 period. Lows move less: 73.2°F in July, 73.7°F in August, 72.4°F in September. Rain peaks in August at 7.69 inches, against 7.46 in July and 6.37 in September, and September drops to 9.2 days with a tenth of an inch or more, from 11.5 in both July and August. The Wekiwa spring reading stays put across all three.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain almost nothing on weather: July is 0.4 degrees warmer by day, 0.23 inch drier and just as often wet. Shift four weeks later and September trims 2 degrees off the high, 1.32 inches of rain and 2.3 wet days, but lands on the hurricane season’s September 10 peak.
Is August a good time to visit Orlando?
Yes, for families tied to summer dates who can swim early, do parks in the morning and keep afternoons indoors, and for anyone who wants a 75.6°F spring against a 91.6°F sky. No, for travelers who want long dry afternoons outdoors, and for anyone whose dates cannot move inside the hurricane window.
If August is a no, look to Florida’s dry season, November through April, laid out month by month in our best time to visit Florida guide, and skip March if crowds matter, when family school holidays fill the parks. If summer is fixed, September runs 2 degrees cooler with 1.32 inches less rain, in exchange for the storm-season peak.
August trades a wet afternoon for a long warm evening, with sunset at 8:05 p.m. on the 15th and dawn lows that stay near 74°F.
The last word
Settle the dates before the itinerary: if they can move, book them refundable and watch the National Hurricane Center from mid-August. Then give the car a night off. A LYNX All-Day Pass costs $4.50 on a bus network that covers Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties, valid from 4:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m. the next day, provided you tell the operator you want it before putting money in the farebox.
