Where to Stay in Madeira: Funchal, Monte, the North Coast and the Levada Trailheads

You have picked Madeira. What is left is a bed, and on an island this steep a bed is a timetable. Funchal holds most of the rooms, the wine lodge on Avenida Arriaga and the base station of the cable car; everything else is a drive with hairpins in it. The service up to Monte stops running at 17:45, the wicker sledges take Sundays off, and since January 2026 a classified trail needs a 30-minute entry slot booked online before you leave home.

So the question is not which zone photographs best. It is what a base does to a day: how far the trailhead sits at eight in the morning, whether dinner is a walk or a mountain road in the dark, and what the municipality adds per person per night on top of the room.

What moves a base decision instead is the municipal tax, the last hour of the cable car, and a levada slot that is fixed the moment you buy it.

Where to stay in Funchal: the hotel zone, the old town and what each gives

Funchal’s rooms sit in three bands. West along the seafront runs the Zona Hoteleira, above Lido and São Martinho, built around sea pools and swimming platforms. The center holds the Avenida Arriaga axis, where Blandy’s Wine Lodge and the cathedral fall on one short walk. East of it, the Zona Velha keeps the restaurant lanes of Rua de Santa Maria and the base station of the Monte cable car. Above all three, the hill road passes the Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira at Bom Sucesso, with more than 2,000 exotic species on Caminho do Meio.

The Zona Hoteleira buys water access and a quiet corridor, then charges for it in commuting. Dinner in the old town is a bus or a taxi both ways, and so is anything with a fixed departure. Blandy’s best-selling Premium Tour runs EUR 23 for 45 minutes and a tasting of three Madeira wines, with English departures Monday to Friday at 10:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, extra slots on Sunday, and a booking asked for in advance. The municipal tax follows you west too: EUR 2 per person per night applies across the whole municipality, whatever channel you booked through.

In the Zona Velha the evening happens at your door, and the first cabin of the day is a walk rather than a drive, since the cable car opens at 08:45. That proximity costs after dark, when the lanes stay loud until the last table clears. Two kinds of traveler should look elsewhere: light sleepers, and anyone keeping a rental car for the whole stay, because those one-way lanes and their scarce curbside turn the car into a nightly chore. The Funchal tourist tax: how much per night and when it stops

Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night on every paid overnight stay in the municipality, capped at seven consecutive nights: EUR 14 per guest at most. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira who can show a local tax address. The charge does not vary with the booking channel, and it appears whether you paid a platform or the host.

The cap rewards sitting still. Two adults on ten consecutive Funchal nights pay EUR 28 in total, because the counter stops at seven nights each. Break the stay instead (seven nights in town, three on the north coast, then three more in Funchal) and a second cap opens: the same ten Funchal nights now cost the pair EUR 40. Small money against a room bill, and still the clearest illustration that changing base has a price of its own.

Where to stay in Monte vs Funchal: cable car last departure times

Sleeping in Monte and sleeping under it produce two different days. From a Monte bed, the gate of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a walk: EUR 18, 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum. The museum closes at 17:00 all year while the grounds run to 19:00 from April to September and to 18:00 from October to March. You get the paths before 08:45, which is the hour the cabins start lifting the day’s arrivals off the seafront.

The service runs 08:45 to 17:45, every day of the year except Christmas Day. That single line is the real constraint on a Monte base: after 17:45, the link to Funchal’s tables is the road, in a taxi or your own car, and it works the same way in reverse for anyone who stays up there for the late light. Down in the old town, nothing about your evening depends on a cabin at all.

Fares reward choosing a direction. A return is EUR 22 and a one way EUR 16, children up to 6 ride free and 7 to 14 pay half, and an e-ticket bought at home stays valid 60 days. The classic sequence is one way up at EUR 16, then down by carro de cesto steered by two carreiros in white: EUR 30 for one rider, EUR 40 for two, EUR 60 for three. Those tickets cannot be booked. They sell on site, same day only, Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00, and no three-person sledge runs in rain or on wet ground.

Where to stay west of Funchal: Câmara de Lobos and Ponta do Sol

West of the city the coast keeps its aspect and drops most of the crowd. Câmara de Lobos is a working fishing harbor under the cliffs; Ponta do Sol sits further along, where a valley opens to the sea. Both put you on the sunny flank, the one the official thermometer actually describes: every figure here comes from IPMA station 522 at Funchal, 58 m, south coast, where July averages a high of 77.7°F and 0.07 inches of rain, with the sea off the island at 75.0°F taken as a mean of daily maxima.

The handiest yardstick for how far west you have moved is the Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform on the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos. Entry is EUR 3, free for children of 12 and under and for registered residents of Madeira. It opens 08:30 to 20:00 from March to October and shuts an hour earlier, at 19:00, from November to February, which in December falls well after dark. One caveat we will not bury: no readable institutional page carries that fare or those hours, only concordant secondary sources, so confirm both at the gate.

For two kinds of trip this is the wrong calculation. Without a car, you inherit bus timetables for every dinner and every ticketed thing in town. With a Funchal-heavy list (the lodge tour, the market lanes, the gardens above the city), you spend the good evening hours on the coast road instead of at a table. A practical note before you book: the EUR 2 charge above is Funchal’s own municipal tax, so for a bed in Câmara de Lobos or Ponta do Sol, ask the host what local charge lands on the final bill.

Driving times from Funchal to the other Madeira towns

The north runs its own weather and the numbers here cannot cover it. Every climate figure quoted comes from that Funchal gauge at 58 m: January highs of 68.0°F, lows of 57.7°F, 2.64 inches of rain, 6.2 days recording at least 1 mm. IPMA’s own caution is that high ground is colder and far wetter, and that the other end of a coast keeps its own weather. For the month-by-month picture, the best-time verdict and the January page do that job properly.

Porto Moniz is the reason to sleep up here at all. The serviced complex of volcanic pools charges EUR 3 and comes with changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post, open 09:00 to 19:00 in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter. The neighboring Cachalote pools are free and open at any hour. What we could not read anywhere is the date the summer timetable becomes the winter one, so a shoulder-month swim can end at 17:00 without notice: ask at the desk on arrival.

The cost is the driving. Dinner in Funchal from a north-coast bed means crossing the island twice, and in January daylight lasts about 10 hours 17 minutes on the 15th, which puts the return leg in full dark on a road of switchbacks, tunnels and low cloud. Pick the rental with that in mind rather than the cheapest engine, and note the emergency number across Madeira, as across Portugal: 112.

What the north does not hand you is the evening. Tables thin out early, the choice narrows, and anything with a fixed departure back in the city (the EUR 23 lodge tour, the EUR 18 garden, sledges that stop at 18:00 and skip Sundays) becomes a two-way commitment. Trail status is the other variable up here: on 8 September 2026, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were both listed as restricted, so a base chosen for one specific walk can wake up without it.

Where to stay for the levadas: PR 1 and booking a levada pass

Since 1 January 2026 every classified trail charges an access fee and requires a booking, and the booking exists online only, through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. It covers individuals, groups and anyone walking with a company: EUR 4.50 per person for the general public, EUR 3 with a tourism company holding an IFCN protocol, free for regional residents. Entry comes in 30-minute slots running from sunrise to sunset. That is why a base matters more than a view: your slot is a fixed hour, and the drive to the trailhead has to happen before it.

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, the Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo crossing, is the walk that shapes itineraries: 6.1 km one way, about 3 hours, rated Moderate, between 1,857 m and 1,491 m of altitude, EUR 10.50 for anyone over 12 and free for 12 and under. The shorter out-and-back to the Pedra Rija viewpoint costs EUR 4.50 on the same terms. Daylight sets how many slots a day even has: about 14 hours 08 minutes on July 15 against 10 hours 17 minutes on January 15.

Past Pedra Rija the route runs one way only, toward Pico Ruivo, with no return along the same path. Someone who turns around late does not turn around, they finish, and they finish at the far end rather than beside their car. That rule decides the base as much as the trail does: two cars, a taxi arranged in advance, or a driver who drops and collects. PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo was open on the same September date and stands as its own walk, with its own fee and its own slot.

Beyond the single fee sits a ladder of passes: EUR 9.00 for a day pass covering two trails or more, EUR 22.50 for three days, EUR 52.50 for seven. PR 1 is excluded from the day pass and priced on its own. At EUR 4.50 a trail, the day pass starts paying on the second walk of the same day, while the seven-day pass costs roughly what eleven single entries cost, so it earns its keep only on a week of two trails most days. A base within reach of several trailheads is what makes that arithmetic work.

An early slot rewrites two practical things. Breakfast served from 08:00 is worthless if you need to be at 1,857 m by then, so a kitchen or an early bakery beats a buffet. And the car has to be reachable at dawn, which rules out a garage that opens with reception. Book the slot before the room: a sold-out half hour moves the entire day, and trail status is published trail by trail, so check yours the night before.

Porto Santo vs Madeira: where to stay

Porto Santo, the neighboring island, offers what Madeira’s geology cannot: a long sand beach and flat ground to walk on. Choose it and you trade the cable car, the levadas and the garden circuit for a day whose main decision is which end of the sand. It works as a two or three-night annex on a longer trip. It fails as the base for a Madeira itinerary, because every main-island plan then begins with a sea crossing.

The crossing is where we have to be careful. Porto Santo Line advertises tourist class “From EUR 47.02” and a one-day cruise “From EUR 72.02”, yet its own footnote ties those figures to passengers registered on SIMplifica with a residence certificate, or to the value after the Social Mobility Allowance refund for Madeira residents, with a fuel surcharge on top. The fare a visitor pays is not printed on the public page, and we could not read the booking engine that holds it. No official source prints the crossing time either, and third-party sites disagree, so we repeat none of them: price your dates in the operator’s engine first.

How many nights in Madeira

Nights follow the constraints, not the map. Three of them belong entirely to Funchal, within walking distance of the cable car station and the Avenida, which is how our 3-day plan spends them. A week: five or six in Funchal, then two beside a trailhead or out west, accepting that the tax counter restarts on your return. Ten or more, and the north coast or Porto Santo earns its own block. Book the 30-minute levada slot first, the room second, and keep 17:45 in mind on the day you go up to Monte.
