Isla Mujeres sits a short ferry ride off Cancun and Puerto Juarez. It is small enough that most visitors get around by golf cart, scooter or bicycle, and the main town is walkable. In October the sea around it is still bath-warm, and the sky rains often enough to plan around.

The trade this month is rain and storm exposure against warm water. October is the wettest of the three months around it at 10.91 inches, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs to November 30. September runs hotter and November drier, so the decision is whether to go now or shift four weeks.

Isla Mujeres weather in October

The Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (SMN, run by CONAGUA) publishes 1991-2020 normals that put an average October at a high of 90.0°F, a low of 74.7°F and 10.91 inches of precipitation. They are measured at its Cancun station (23155) on the mainland, about 8 miles across the channel. No station on the island has published normals, so every figure here describes the nearest official reading, not a thermometer on the island itself.

In an average October, 17.6 days record measurable rain by the SMN’s own count. That is more than half the days of the month. The station sheet does not publish its threshold for “measurable” and gives no duration, so a rain day could be a passing squall or a long soak. Pack for showers on most days and carry a light rain layer in the day bag.

The gap between the 90.0°F high and the 74.7°F low is 15.3 degrees, and the low is warm. Evenings need only a light shirt. Pack breathable daytime layers, a light rain jacket, sandals that dry quickly and sun protection.

On October 15 the day runs 11 hours 42 minutes, with sunrise at 6:41 a.m. and sunset at 6:23 p.m. in Cancun local time (converted from the UTC figures at sunrise-sunset.org). Plan the ride back from the far end of the island with that sunset in mind.

Can you swim in Isla Mujeres in October? Sea temperature

Sea surface off Isla Mujeres averages 85.9°F in October, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean would.

At 85.9°F a swimsuit is all the gear a swim requires. Playa Norte is the calmest beach on the island: it faces the north tip, where the current running along the east side breaks.

We found no wave-height or wind series for October in our sources, so we cannot say how choppy the crossing or the open-water side will be. The only sea-state signal we can serve is the storm calendar. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so the first half of the month is the stretch to check the forecast before a boat day.

How busy is Isla Mujeres in October? Crowds and prices

The Atlantic hurricane season, which governs Isla Mujeres, runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10. October sits on the back slope of that peak with the season still running through November. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate series for the island, so we crown no month expensive or cheap.

We found no booking-lead data for October, so we give no number of weeks. What the calendar supports is a rule about terms: a room booked for October is booked inside hurricane season, and the cancellation clause matters more than the date you book it.

Quintana Roo’s lodging tax, the Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje, is set at 5% of the billed accommodation value. It rises to 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental (Ley del Impuesto al Hospedaje del Estado de Quintana Roo, art. 8). Check whether your quoted rate already includes it.

The one place where paying more changes October is the cancellation clause. A room or tour rate you can cancel ahead of a storm forecast covers the risky first half of the month. Ultramar ferry tickets are non-refundable but valid for six months from purchase, and we could not verify what the operator does when a sailing is canceled for weather.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres in October

Water plans suit October best. Swimming, snorkeling and boat trips lose little to a passing shower, while a scooter loop or a clifftop walk loses more. With 17.6 rain days on the station’s count, keep one plan that needs no dry sky and one that does, and swap them by the morning sky.

Playa Norte is the calm-water beach, facing the north tip of the island where the east-side current breaks. Punta Sur, at the southern tip, is a clifftop park with a sculpture garden and a lighthouse overlooking open water. Most visitors reach both by golf cart, scooter or bicycle, since the island is small and the main town is walkable.

Garrafon, a private reef park on the south end, is commonly sold as a snorkeling and activities day pass. Boat trips to Isla Contoy, the national park and bird sanctuary north of the island, are commonly sold from town. Garrafon’s own site and CONANP’s page for Contoy did not load when we checked, so we state no admission price, visitor limit or fee. We could not verify October hours for any of the four places.

We found no source on free entry to any of these places, so we label none of them free. Ultramar’s ticket rules do give one price break: children under 1.20 meters ride at a reduced fare, and infants under 12 months travel free with a boarding pass.

Isla Mujeres itinerary for October

Day one starts with the crossing. Arrive at Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas or Playa Caracol 30 minutes before departure, so you reach the island by mid-morning. Spend the first hours at Playa Norte, then keep midday, when highs reach 90.0°F, for lunch in town and a swim. Ride a golf cart to Punta Sur in the afternoon for the lighthouse and the sculpture garden, and start back toward town before the light goes.

Day two goes to the water: a snorkeling day pass at Garrafon or a boat trip to Isla Contoy, both sold from the island, with prices and Contoy visitor limits to confirm on arrival. Book the earliest departure available, which leaves the rest of the day to absorb a delay. If a storm system is forecast, drop the boat and stay in town, where everything is walkable, then move the water day to the next clear morning.

Isla Mujeres in October vs September and November

Air figures for all three months come from the SMN’s Cancun station (23155), 1991-2020. Highs step down 3.6 degrees from September to October and another 3.5 degrees into November. Lows slip from 76.3°F to 74.7°F to 72.1°F. October is the wettest of the three at 10.91 inches, against 7.15 in September and 5.17 in November. The Open-Meteo Marine sea temperatures fall from 87.1°F to 85.9°F to 84.0°F.

Moving four weeks later to November gets you 5.74 inches less rain and 4.7 days fewer with measurable rain. It costs 3.5 degrees on the afternoon high and 1.9 degrees on the sea. Moving four weeks earlier to September brings 3.76 inches less rain and 2.5 days fewer of it. In exchange the high is 3.6 degrees hotter, the sea 1.2 degrees warmer and you land on the storm peak of September 10.

Is October a good time to visit Isla Mujeres?

Yes for travelers who swim more than they sightsee, book cancellable rooms and can shift a boat day. No for anyone with fixed dates, a single day for Isla Contoy or a low tolerance for rain, since 17.6 rain days and 10.91 inches are the cost of the month. The U.S. State Department rates Quintana Roo Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” in its Mexico Travel Advisory reissued May 29, 2026.

If the answer is no, prefer November. Rain falls to 5.17 inches, less than half of October’s, on 12.9 rain days, and the mid-August to mid-October window of peak activity is behind you. Among the three months compared here, October keeps most of September’s water, only 1.2 degrees cooler at 85.9°F, while the afternoon high drops 3.6 degrees to 90.0°F.

Choose October if you are happy to plan around a shower: book a room you can cancel, keep the boat day flexible and swim in 85.9°F water once the clouds move off. Budget one fixed cost on arrival, the Visitax state fee that every foreign visitor to Quintana Roo owes, set at 2.50 UMA and about 293 pesos at the UMA’s 2026 daily value.
