Isla Mujeres sits a short ferry ride off Cancun and Puerto Juarez. In May the ride ends in 93.6°F afternoons and water at 84.0°F, on a calendar that closes a month before the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1.

May is not the only option on either side. April counts 3.6 days fewer with measurable rain, while June counts 4.3 days more and lifts the overnight low by 1.2 degrees.

Isla Mujeres weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

The air normals below are the 1991-2020 figures from Mexico’s national weather service, the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (SMN), measured at its Cancun station, number 23155. That station stands on the mainland about 8 miles across the channel from the island. It is the nearest official source, and no station on Isla Mujeres itself has published normals, so read each air figure as Cancun’s May, a close neighbor and not a reading from the beach. May averages a 93.6°F high, a 75.6°F low and 3.43 inches of precipitation.

SMN counts 7.8 days of measurable rain in an average May, about one day in four. The service does not publish the rainfall cutoff behind that count, so set it against other countries’ tallies with care. On a four-day stay, plan on one wet day, and keep the boat trip or the beach afternoon movable so the day that turns rainy is the one you spend in town.

The high reaches 93.6°F by day and the low holds at 75.6°F by night, a spread of 18.0 degrees. Nights stay warm, so no jacket goes in the bag. Pack breathable shirts and shorts, a hat, sunscreen and sandals that dry, plus one light rain layer for the wet days.

May 15 gives 13 hours 12 minutes of daylight. Sunrise is at 6:07 a.m. and sunset at 7:19 p.m. local time (the source lists 11:07 and 00:19 UTC, converted to Cancun time). The hours right after sunrise are cooler than the afternoon’s 93.6°F, so beach and walking plans belong there, and dinner outdoors starts after the light is gone.

Can you swim in Isla Mujeres in May? Sea temperature

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Isla Mujeres at 84.0°F in May, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.

At 84.0°F the water is warm swimming water, and it sits 9.6 degrees below the 93.6°F afternoon air, so getting in doubles as relief from the heat. Playa Norte faces the north tip of the island, where the current running along the east side breaks. Start your swimming there.

We found no wind or swell series for May, so we quote no wave heights. The east side carries a current and Punta Sur looks out on open water, so treat those shores as places to look from and ask locally before wading in. May falls outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season, so no storm season is running over the water yet.

How busy is Isla Mujeres in May? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the island, so we place May on the calendar and rank no month expensive or cheap. The calendar fact: the Atlantic hurricane season, which governs Isla Mujeres, runs June 1 to November 30, making May the last full month before it opens.

We also found no data on how far ahead rooms fill in May, so we name no number of weeks. The fixed rules belong to the ferry. Ultramar tickets to Isla Mujeres are valid for six months from purchase and are non-refundable, and passengers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure. Quintana Roo’s lodging tax, the Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje, is set at 5% of the billed accommodation value, or 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental. We could not verify whether quoted nightly rates already include it, so check before comparing listings. Every foreign visitor entering Quintana Roo also owes Visitax, a state fee of 2.50 UMA, about 293 pesos at the UMA’s 2026 daily value.

The one line where paying more changes the month is cooling. With a 75.6°F average low, a room with working air conditioning decides how you sleep, and it is worth confirming in writing at booking. We found no price data for that premium, so we quote none.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres in May

The sea sits at 84.0°F in May, hurricane season is a month away, and 3.43 inches of precipitation is under half of June’s 7.26 inches. Open-water days are the natural use of the month. Boat trips are commonly sold from the island.

Punta Sur, at the island’s southern tip, is a clifftop park with a sculpture garden and a lighthouse overlooking open water. Isla Contoy, a national park and bird sanctuary north of Isla Mujeres, is reached on those boat trips. CONANP’s own page for the park did not load when we checked, so we state no visitor limits or fees. Garrafon, a private reef park on the south end, is commonly sold as a snorkeling and activities day pass. Its own site did not load either, so we quote no admission price.

Between sights, the difference from April is 2.0 degrees of extra heat at the afternoon high (93.6°F against 91.6°F). Most visitors get around by golf cart, scooter or bicycle rather than by car, since the island is small and its main town is walkable. Bicycles suit the hours after the 6:07 a.m. sunrise, and a golf cart suits midday.

We could not verify entry fees or free days at Punta Sur, and we found no verified list of free attractions for May, so we name none. The only charges we could confirm for the trip are the ferry, the lodging tax and Visitax.

Isla Mujeres itinerary for May

Day one starts at the Cancun docks. Ultramar sails from Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas (kilometer 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan) and Playa Caracol (kilometer 9.5) into the Terminal Maritima APIQROO. We did not confirm a May timetable, so check Ultramar before you go. Take an early boat, since sunrise is at 6:07 a.m., and rent a golf cart for Punta Sur’s lighthouse and sculpture garden while the morning is still cool. Spend midday in the 84.0°F water at Playa Norte, then walk the town until the light goes at 7:19 p.m.

Day two goes to the water: an Isla Contoy trip or a Garrafon reef pass, booked directly because we could not confirm either one’s fees. With 7.8 rain days in an average May, keep this day movable. If the morning turns wet, trade it with a town-and-beach day and go out on the next dry one.

Isla Mujeres in May vs April and June

Against April, May’s average high is 2.0 degrees higher and its low 2.4 degrees higher. Precipitation roughly doubles from 1.67 to 3.43 inches, rain days climb from 4.2 to 7.8, and the sea gains 1.7 degrees. June’s average high is 0.4 degrees below May’s, yet its low is 1.2 degrees higher, precipitation more than doubles to 7.26 inches, rain days reach 12.1, and the sea gains another 1.5 degrees. Air temperatures come from the SMN’s Cancun station, sea temperatures from the Open-Meteo Marine API.

Moving four weeks later buys water at 85.5°F and costs 4.3 days more of measurable rain, more than double the precipitation, and the start of hurricane season on June 1. Moving four weeks earlier buys 4.2 rain days and 1.67 inches of precipitation, at the price of a sea 1.7 degrees cooler and highs 2.0 degrees lower.

Is May a good time to visit Isla Mujeres?

Yes for anyone who wants swimming water and long days: an 84.0°F sea, 13 hours 12 minutes of daylight on May 15 and 7.8 rain days. No for anyone whose limit is a 93.6°F afternoon. Check the U.S. State Department’s Mexico Travel Advisory too. It rates Quintana Roo Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ in the version reissued May 29, 2026.

April suits heat-averse or rain-averse travelers, with 91.6°F highs, 4.2 rain days and a sea at 82.3°F. June makes sense only for the warmest water of the three, 85.5°F, and it comes with 12.1 rain days and a hurricane season opening on the 1st.

May’s own pairing is an 84.0°F sea with the hurricane season still a month away.

The last word

Pick the number of wet days you can live with, 4.2 in April, 7.8 in May or 12.1 in June, because the afternoon highs sit close together at 91.6°F, 93.6°F and 93.2°F. Families should note the ferry rules before the dock: children under 1.20 meters ride at a reduced fare, and infants under 12 months travel free with a boarding pass.
