One scope note before the numbers start. Every figure here comes from the model cell centered on 18.5818° N, 68.4043° W, at the island’s eastern tip, where the trade winds arrive with nothing in front of them. The sheltered south coast, where the Saona boats leave from, is calmer and drier than these numbers suggest.

Punta Cana weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

The air figures come from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020, read through Open-Meteo. That is model output for a grid cell, not a thermometer at the airport, and a station record would land somewhere near but not on top of it. For January the reanalysis gives an average high of 78.9°F, an average low of 74.5°F and 1.72 inches of rain. We would rather name the instrument than let you take it for one.

An average January records measurable rain on 4.3 days, roughly one day in seven, at the 0.10-inch threshold. The heavier category, an inch or more in a day, comes in at 0.1 day, which works out to about one soaking January day per decade. Between the high and the low sits 4.4 degrees, which is why nothing warm belongs in the suitcase. Pack for 79°F at two in the afternoon and 75°F at two in the morning. Yes, and the figure is 81.0°F, from the Open-Meteo Marine API averaged over 2015-2024. Read the fine print on it: that is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day’s cycle, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour mean would give. Other sea tables publish January values a degree or two lower for exactly that reason, and neither is wrong.

In practice 81.0°F is water you walk into without the flinch and the negotiation. It is 6.5 degrees above the month’s average overnight air low, so an early swim feels warmer than the beach you crossed to reach it. A mask-and-snorkel hour needs no wetsuit at that temperature, and children stay in until somebody calls them out.

On wind and swell we have to hold back. The practical split falls around the tenth. For a trip inside the first ten days, treat the booking like the Christmas week itself and lock flights and room together, months out. A full-day boat trip booked four days in advance carries better odds now than in December, which averages 6.0 days with measurable rain and half an inch more water. That is the month’s real gift to anyone planning a fixed-date excursion.

The named targets sit in three directions. Bávaro and Cabeza de Toro line the windward beach strip; Macao is the open surf beach north of the resort belt; Hoyo Azul, the cenote inside Scape Park, and the lagoons of the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park are the inland half day. Isla Saona boats leave from Bayahíbe on the sheltered south coast. We hold no verified admission price or opening hour for any of them, so none is quoted here: check each operator’s own page before you pay.

January changes the air around those places more than the places themselves. A freshwater cenote holds its temperature through the year, while the afternoon above it comes in at 78.9°F, about a degree below December’s 79.8°F, which makes the walk in easier and the water feel identical. The sea moves the other way: 82.1°F in December, 81.0°F in January, 80.0°F by February. The ocean cools while the calendar heads toward spring.

Breakfast at 9:30, second swim at 11, then shade from noon to three, the flattest hours of a 78.9°F afternoon. Back in the sea at 4, out at 5:30, sunset at 6:18 pm, dinner after that. A single light layer covers the evening.

Day two goes inland and comes back. Leave at 8 for Scape Park and Hoyo Azul or for the Indigenous Eyes lagoons, and be back on the coast by mid-afternoon with two hours of light left. If the weather turns, remember the shape of January rain: 4.3 days at 0.10 inch or more, 0.1 day at an inch or more. The likely event is a shower. Hold the boat day for a clear morning and move the inland walk into the gray one.

Punta Cana in January vs December and February

Across the three months the daytime air barely moves: 79.8°F in December, 78.9°F in January, 79.0°F in February, a span of under a degree. Rain does move, and in one direction, from 2.24 inches down to 1.42, with wet days falling from 6.0 to 3.7. So does the sea, from 82.1°F to 80.0°F. December is the warmest and wettest of the three, February the driest and coolest in the water, and January sits between them on every line.

Shift four weeks later and you buy 0.30 inch less rain and 0.6 fewer wet days, and you pay for it with a sea a full degree cooler and nights 0.3 degrees cooler. Shift four weeks earlier and the water gains 1.1 degrees, at the cost of 1.7 extra days with rain in the month. Neither trade is dramatic, which is the useful finding: the calendar decides your January here more than the climate does.

Is January a good time to visit Punta Cana?

For a beach week built on swimming, yes without reservation. An 81.0°F sea, 78.9°F afternoons and rain on roughly one day in seven is as reliable as a winter vacation gets in this hemisphere. For anyone who wants the coast to themselves, or whose dates are locked to the first ten days of the month and whose budget is not, this is the harder month to arrive in.

If that describes you, February is the month to shift into: 1.42 inches of rain across 3.7 wet days, a daytime high of 79.0°F that matches January’s within a tenth of a degree, and a sea at 80.0°F that most swimmers will not distinguish from 81.0. You lose one degree of water and the holiday pressure at the same time.

Of these three months, January is the only one that keeps the sea at 81°F or better while holding measurable rain days under five.

The decision that matters in January is your dates, not your resort: the first ten days and the last ten are the same weather and a different trip to book.
